I get you're a business. But whats good for the goose should be good for the gander. I challenge all the devs of the game to link their real debit cards to C-store and try to claim a T6 (23c) ship, with your own cash. If you can do that and still think these gambling give aways are fair.... well then I'll never TRIBBLE again,

There's nothing unfair about the current promo.

Posting in a Veruca Salt thread (RIP Gene Wilder :( )

    "Devs" don't make business decisions.

No one "needs" a connie to stay alive, or to play STO.

There are eleventy existing rant threads.

There are several threads explaining how to get a connie WITHOUT GAMBLING. 100% guaranteed. Like: http://forum.arcgames.com/startrekonline/discussion/1221029/128-to-buy-the-tos-ship-details-inside#latest

I actually like this crazy idea. It'll never happen though.

But their own money will get boomeranged back to them so theyll never feel that burn.

It's strange - I've been playing this game for years and having tons of fun, and I've never flown a T6 Connie in all that time. Isn't that just amazing? How did I possibly live all this time without having a ludicrously overpowered (yet still massively outdated) starship?

In fact, come to think of it, I don't have any ships from either lockboxes or R&D packs. How have I managed to enjoy STO all this time without them?

That is unpossible! Enjoy the game without a lockbox, promo or lobi ship!

    *mind blown*

I have two LockBox ships. One is the Konnie which my Fed Science char uses. The other is a Jem'Hadar Heavy Escort Carrier. Which my KDF Tac has left parked for over a year. I find myself returning again and again to my T-5U ships and having lots of fun with them. Did all of the Tau Dewa dailies with a group outfitted with Shuttles once. Just because someone mentioned it in Chat and we then thought, 'Why not?'

Oh, sure, I've got some promo ships - I get the starship from every summer event, because it's really easy to get, and guaranteed. (I can't seem to master the ice race in the winter event, but that's okay by me, because I don't actually want a Breen ship - I think they look like spacegoing office blocks.) And every so often, Cryptic hands out some free ships, and I pick those up too. (My newborn Klink engineer is going to enjoy his Koro't'inga when he gets there...)

But I've never gambled for a ship, and I can't say I feel any loss for never having won one.

Yup, my Jem bug is collecting dust. I think I flew it for a week. Then parked her at ESD,and jumped back in my Defiant. My Tac toon promised her that he would never cheat on her again.

The only thing that is unfair about it, is that Cryptic refuses to call it a gamble or a lottery. Because if they did they would get into trouble with several other countries.
  • salazarrazesalazarraze Member Posts: 3,794 Arc User
It's not a lottery or a gamble. Neither is McDonald's Monopoly, or prizes in cereal boxes. Hell it's even "no purchase necessary" with the exchange. Explain to me how I can get free Powerball tickets that give me other free stuff like hot dogs, sodas, and potato chips if I don't win.

What if they don't want to fly the ship? Why should the developers spend their hard-earned money on something in this game at your whim?

And I think there is a good reason why the regulation usually only applies when you can win money. The "real" gambler fallacy is the belief that all the money you spend will be worth it, because you'll win eventually and get it all back. And thus, people end up in debt (often with people of questionable reputation, like mobsters, or banks), foreclose their house, sell their kidney or whatever.

A Connie is not going to pay off your debts.

    That's not it.

The reason MMO gambling and gambling in games like Fallout: New Vegas don't run afoul of gambling laws is because those laws regulate gambling for money.

You can't win money by gambling in STO. These companies are careful to include in their license agreements with users that you dont have a property interest in any of your virtual stuff, and don't have the right to sell it for real money.

PWE sells Zen, that's what they sell. What you do with the Zen afterwards is mostly irrelevant, Zen is a service they provide that you consume, as part of the service they provide in running video games. Once they have your money, and you have your Zen, that's pretty much the end of it. You can't get your money back out. It's like watching a movie at a movie theater.

Think of it like this- whether or not you get a tos connie from a promo pack, you haven't won any money. Gambling laws regulate games where you win money, or else a property interest in something worth money.

    This, so much this.

The odds should be increased. That way you have a better chance of winning. Way it is now. It's designed to take a lot of your $. Not any different than a carnival booth.

I learned my lesson. I refuse to do any of it again. Just like those carnival booth.

^'Tis true. I remember this, they have a master code or acct that unlocks everything in-game. But where is the fun in that? Its about the journey (grinding) not the destination.

How about a raffle to us peasants for special dev accounts with everything unlocked?

    Apples & Oranges, my friend.

Carnival booths do one thing, and one thing only. Sell "chances".

The current promotion "adds" something to a standard C-store product, as "incentive" to convince you to purchase more of that particular product.

One can readily argue that if you "aren't interested" in the core purchase (this time around, the R&D package), one shouldn't buy any of the item.

Because it's quite clear, before the purchase is made, that if you desire to ignore everything else but the "chance at ultra rare prize", you aren't "shopping" for the right thing. Like when you were a kid, did your mom buy you 50 boxes of Corn Flakes so you could get "the rare toy", or were you told "you get what toy you get when we buy each box"?
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

They are the same. That is what it is. Sell you a chance. Both costs lot of $. Both give you a prize. And both gives you mostly a small prize. There's no difference.

    1) I seriously doubt the people who work on the game like Taco/Bort etc have any say whatsoever on what things will cost in game.

    2) In a very real way, this is indeed "good for the Goose is good for the Gander" , in that the company will make profit and we can continue to play for free.

    3) Why punish the people who make the game for us, they probably don't make big bucks, why make them waste their money, "just to see" how bad the odds are ?
Because even if they do see the God awful odds, its not like they can then go and say, "Ok, lets up these odds !"...they have no say in it. Something like that would be up to the Ex Producer and other entities involved.
The poor game devs are just following orders, trying to keep their jobs.

But I understand your frustration at their choice to go Promo on this specific iconic/legendary Trek ship.
I mean, for me, its the first thing I think of when someone says Trek, followed closely by Spock.

But that doesn't mean they have to make them easily available. They felt they had a good opportunity to make a boatload of cash and took it... I cant really blame them for it.
